Luis Suárez Sends Emotional Message Ahead of Messi’s Argentina Farewell

Buenos Aires is preparing for a farewell night as Lionel Messi is set to play what has been billed as his final match for Argentina, with Benin the visitors for an early-Wednesday friendly.

Before the occasion, Luis Suárez sent a warm message to his long-time friend and former attacking partner. The Uruguayan shared dressing rooms and front lines with Messi at Barcelona and Inter Miami, while their friendship has remained as important away from football as on it.

Quick facts

  • Lionel Messi is due to face Benin in Buenos Aires at 01:00 on Wednesday.
  • The match is described as Messi’s last appearance for Argentina.
  • Luis Suárez praised Messi’s international career and Argentina achievements.
  • Neymar, another close friend of Messi, also sent him a message before the game.

“Gordo, I wanted to send you a big hug,” Suárez said. “I hope you enjoy wearing your country’s national-team shirt, which was so important in your career.”

Suárez pointed to the extraordinary moments Messi has experienced with Argentina, including honours that, in his view, every player dreams of winning while representing his nation.

“You have earned the recognition of everyone for your career and for what you represented for your country,” the Inter Miami forward added. “You should feel very proud. A hug, and enjoy your day.”

For Messi, the Buenos Aires fixture offers a home-city setting for a possible final international bow. For Suárez, it is another chance to salute the player with whom he formed one of the defining club partnerships of the last decade, from Catalonia to South Florida.
