Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has questioned the institutional management of clubs in the Brasileirão, arguing that the country’s leading teams have scope to adopt a corporate structure.
Speaking on the state of Brazilian football, Lula said the current way clubs are run deserves scrutiny and suggested that sides could become companies under legislation already in force in the country.
The president’s intervention places the business model of Brazil’s major clubs back in focus. The legal framework allows teams to move towards company status, offering an alternative to the traditional association-based administration that has long shaped football across the country.
Lula’s comments were directed at institutional governance rather than any individual Brasileirão club, but they underline a wider debate in Brazilian football over finance, accountability and the future ownership of its most prominent sides.
