Mackie Samoskevich nets two in Kraken’s 6-1 rout of Flames

Seattle answered a quick turnaround with a decisive home-ice performance Sunday, rolling past the Calgary Flames 6-1 at Climate Pledge Arena behind Mackie Samoskevich’s first two goals in a Kraken sweater.

Key takeaways

  • Samoskevich scored twice in his Seattle debut on home ice after arriving from the Florida Panthers in an offseason trade.
  • Berkly Catton finished with a goal and an assist, while Shane Wright, Bobby McMann and Jordan Eberle also found the net.
  • Joey Daccord turned aside 32 shots as Seattle improved to 2-1-0.
  • Morgan Frost supplied Calgary’s only goal, a third-period power-play marker.
  • Dustin Wolf faced 27 shots and allowed six goals for the winless Flames, now 0-3-0.

Seattle buries its early chances

The Kraken had played in Edmonton the previous night, a 3-1 loss to the Oilers, but there was no sign of weary legs early against Calgary. Seattle struck three times in the opening 7:40 and never gave the Flames a route back into the game.

Catton opened the scoring 2:22 into the first period. On a 3-on-2, Kaapo Kakko’s intended feed was knocked down by Zach Whitecloud, but the puck landed for Catton in the high slot. The rookie stepped into a wrist shot from the left side that beat Wolf high on the glove side.

Samoskevich doubled the margin at 4:40. Brandon Montour sent a high clearance out of the defensive zone, and Samoskevich won the chase at the Calgary blue line. He moved in alone and slipped a backhand beneath Wolf.

McMann made it 3-0 at 7:40, controlling a bouncing puck while joining the rush before firing from the left circle over Wolf’s right shoulder.

The two-goal outing was an early payoff for Seattle’s summer investment in Samoskevich. The Kraken acquired him from Florida on June 21 in exchange for a 2026 first-round draft choice and a conditional 2027 second-round pick. He later agreed to a three-year contract worth $11.55 million, carrying a $3.85 million annual cap hit.

Daccord closes the door as the lead grows

Wright restored Seattle’s scoring after a quiet start to the second period, putting the Kraken ahead 4-0 at 11:58. Catton found him in front with his back to the net, and Wright worked a backhand through Wolf’s pads from close range.

Samoskevich added his second at 19:34 of the middle frame. Matty Beniers delivered a quick pass to the right circle on a 3-on-3 rush, and Samoskevich snapped the puck over Wolf’s blocker and under the bar for a five-goal cushion.

Daccord, who had stopped 24 shots in Seattle’s 6-1 season-opening victory over Calgary on Thursday, was closing on another shutout before Frost scored on the power play at 14:25 of the third. Matvei Gridin sent the puck toward the left post, where Frost dropped to one knee and redirected it past Daccord’s right skate.

The Flames’ moment lasted only 39 seconds. Eberle answered with a snap shot from the top of the right circle to restore the five-goal gap and complete the 6-1 final.
