From Manchester to the wider European game, the financial case surrounding Manchester City has become a subject of concern well beyond England’s borders. The club have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought over alleged Premier League financial irregularities dating from the period between 2009 and 2018.
The possible consequences are severe. A major fine is among the options, but the punishment could also include a points deduction, the removal of titles won during the period under scrutiny or even relegation. For a club whose rise has shaped recent Champions League seasons, the prospect of sanctions now reaches far beyond a domestic dispute.
Julio Maldonado, better known as Maldini, argued that the scale of the case demands a punishment with real weight. Speaking on his Hora Maldini segment, the international football analyst said City deserved an “exemplary sanction” because, in his view, there have been many parties harmed by the alleged irregularities.
He suggested that a deduction of around 50 points could be the route chosen: large enough to leave City playing out their fixtures while making relegation effectively unavoidable. The final decision will determine not only the club’s immediate sporting future, but also how firmly English football is prepared to enforce its financial rules on one of Europe’s most prominent teams.
