Manchester United are trying to hold on to JJ Gabriel after the teenager formally indicated that he wants to leave the club, with leading sides across Europe now alert to his situation.
Gabriel, regarded as one of the brightest players in United’s academy, will turn 16 on 6 October. His family believe his football education would be better served elsewhere, feeling the Old Trafford club have fallen behind continental rivals such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Manchester City.
The youngster has impressed throughout the junior age groups and was involved with the first-team squad during pre-season under Michael Carrick. Yet he has not been included in recent squads for Champions League or Carabao Cup fixtures, a development which has added to the feeling around the player that the next step may lie away from Manchester.
United seek a change of heart
Gabriel has asked for his registration to be cancelled before the expiry of his present deal, which would allow him to join another club as a free agent. United, however, are reluctant to grant that request and remain hopeful that they can persuade him to stay.
There is no shortage of interested parties. Chelsea are among the English clubs monitoring matters, while several of Europe’s heavyweight academies are also keen. Gabriel’s Irish family background gives him an EU passport, meaning he could move to Spain or elsewhere in Europe without the legal obstacles that can complicate overseas moves for young English-based players.
For United, it is another delicate academy decision: a player with obvious promise, a family looking for the strongest possible pathway, and the sort of continental attention that rarely makes a teenager’s next fixture any simpler.
