Maple Leafs-Avalanche Clash Headlines 14-Game NHL Saturday Slate

Saturday’s 14-game NHL slate carries plenty of early-season weight, from a generational meeting in Denver to injury-tested clubs opening their home schedules. Two games are set for national television in the United States, with another national broadcast in Canada, while several of the league’s biggest names arrive carrying either hot sticks or unusual scoreless starts.

Ball Arena gets the evening’s most striking age-gap scene when the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Colorado Avalanche at 7 p.m. ET. Colorado defenseman Brent Burns will dress for his 1,011th consecutive game, extending a run that began Nov. 21, 2013. Maple Leafs rookie Gavin McKenna, now 18, was 5 when Burns started that streak. The 41-year-old blueliner and McKenna will share the ice in a matchup featuring three No. 1 overall picks: McKenna in 2026, Toronto captain Auston Matthews in 2016 and Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon in 2013.

MacKinnon has opened with three goals and five assists, a two-point-per-game clip that has helped Colorado to a 3-1-0 record. The Avalanche have scored 23 goals in four games, averaging 5.75 per outing. Toronto enters at 2-2-1 without John Tavares, who left the team Friday after his wife, Aryne, gave birth to their fourth child, Tucker. Nick Paul is the leading option to step into Tavares’ place between William Nylander and Easton Cowan on the second line.

In Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby will try to get his first goal of the season when the Penguins host the Dallas Stars at 7 p.m. ET. Crosby has two assists through five games and was held without a point in Friday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. That is unfamiliar territory for a player who owns the NHL record with 21 straight seasons averaging at least a point a game, having surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s previous mark of 19.

Evgeni Malkin scored against Columbus and, at age 40, shares Pittsburgh’s goal lead with Tommy Novak and Nicholas Robertson at three apiece. Robertson gets a family matchup against his brother, Dallas forward Jason Robertson. Nicholas holds the early edge in the brothers’ scoring count, 3-2. The Penguins are 2-2-1; Dallas arrives at 2-2-0.

Florida’s first home date comes with a hard reminder of how costly its opening trip became. The Panthers bring a 2-0-2 record and a four-game point streak into their game against the Minnesota Wild, but captain Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand are both facing extended absences. Barkov began rehabilitation Friday after injuring his left knee against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 1. Coach Paul Maurice said surgery is not needed, though Barkov is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

It was only Barkov’s second game back after he lost all of last season to ACL and MCL injuries in his right knee suffered Sept. 25, 2025. Marchand is projected to miss a similar span after injuring his left leg against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Florida will have defenseman Aaron Ekblad back after he missed two games for personal reasons. Minnesota, 2-1-1, continues without defenseman Brock Faber, who is sidelined indefinitely following surgery for a fractured skull.

Earlier in the day, David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins host a Philadelphia Flyers club still searching for offense. Pastrnak needs one goal to pass Marchand for fourth on the Bruins’ all-time goal list. His next goal will be No. 423, leaving him four behind Patrice Bergeron, who is due for Hall of Fame induction next month. Pastrnak is coming off a two-goal, two-assist night in Boston’s 6-1 win over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday.

The Bruins are 3-2-0, while Philadelphia is 0-3-2 after managing only six goals over five games. Matvei Michkov has two goals and remains the lone Flyer with more than one.

San Jose’s meeting with Edmonton has a little of everything: a red-hot defenseman, a former team reunion and a potential return for the Sharks’ young captain. Oilers blueliner Evan Bouchard has piled up six goals and five assists in four games, posting an 11-point start with a plus-10 rating. At even strength, Edmonton has scored 11 times and allowed once with Bouchard on the ice, a sharp early response to questions about his defensive play.

Darnell Nurse faces Edmonton for the first time since his offseason move to San Jose. Sharks captain Macklin Celebrini, 20, is a game-time decision after missing two games with a lower-body injury. Edmonton is 3-0-1 and San Jose is 3-1-0 entering the afternoon puck drop at SAP Center.
