Marusic Nears Lazio Milestone as Club’s Longest-Serving Player

Adam Marusic’s recovery carries more than a selection issue for Lazio. As he works his way back from the hamstring strain suffered on the opening matchday, the Montenegro international is approaching another landmark in a long Biancocelesti career.

Patric’s departure has made Marusic the longest-serving player in the current Lazio squad. He will turn 34 in ten days and is now in his 10th straight season at the club, having arrived from Oostende in the summer of 2017.

Quick facts

  • Marusic is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in Lazio’s first league fixture.
  • He has made 356 appearances for Lazio, the highest total among the present Formello squad.
  • He stands sixth in Lazio’s all-time appearance rankings, 15 matches behind Senad Lulic.
  • Lulic is fifth on 371 games, while Stefan Radu holds the club record with 427.
  • Marusic renewed his contract during the winter until 2028, with a conditional option for 2029.

Marusic did not take part in the first session after the team resumed training, but Lazio hope he can attempt a return during the coming days. His condition will be monitored day by day before Gennaro Gattuso decides when he can be included again.

The defender’s history in Rome has been built on availability and adaptation. Across changing coaches, squads and technical projects, he has played on either flank and, when required, in the centre of defence — a role in which Gattuso has also appreciated him.

His next appearance will reopen the pursuit of Lulic. Fifteen further outings would take Marusic beyond the former Bosnia international and into fifth place on Lazio’s historical list, another marker for a player who has remained through almost a decade of change.

Yet his return does not guarantee an immediate restoration to the starting side. Marusic’s absence has given Floriani Mussolini the chance to establish himself on the right, with the academy product improving both in performance and in Gattuso’s thinking.

Gattuso now has room to manage the competition rather than simply reverse it. He can rotate the pair or use Marusic’s versatility elsewhere, depending on the needs of a particular match.

The coach’s regard for the veteran has not altered. Earlier in the season, Gattuso said Lazio would benefit from having more players like him, describing a footballer who had shown the qualities of “a complete man” by spending 10 years with one shirt.

Gattuso added that younger players would make few mistakes and develop significantly if they followed Marusic’s example. That role remains important even if his minutes have to be earned again after injury.

For Floriani Mussolini, Marusic is both the player competing for his place and a model to study. For new arrivals and youngsters at Formello, he remains one of the links between Lazio’s recent past and the side trying to move forward under a new coach.

Lazio have already underlined that value in contractual terms. Marusic’s deal runs to 2028, with an extra year becoming automatic should he make at least 10 appearances in the 2027-28 campaign.

First comes the recovery. Then comes the contest for the right flank, and the steady climb towards Lulic’s total — the next chapter for one of the increasingly rare one-club constants in modern Italian football.
