Mateo Chávez Wins AZ Alkmaar’s August Goal of the Month Award

In Alkmaar, where AZ have begun the 2026-27 Eredivisie campaign among the leading group, Mateo Chávez has added an individual mark to the club’s strong opening. The Mexican defender’s strike against Go Ahead Eagles has been selected as AZ’s Goal of the Month for August.

The news from the club

Chávez, who wears No. 5 and has established himself as a regular in AZ’s starting side, won the award for his finish in the home victory over Go Ahead Eagles on 29 August.

AZ were already 3-1 ahead when the opportunity arrived in the 68th minute. A poor attempted clearance from the visitors left Chávez with possession inside the penalty area, and he drove a powerful effort onto the underside of the crossbar. The ball bounced down over the line, completing one of the most striking goals of AZ’s month.

The match eventually finished 5-2, with Chávez’s goal contributing to a convincing home win. That result formed part of AZ’s run to 16 league points, leaving the Alkmaar side level among the Eredivisie frontrunners with PSV Eindhoven.

The award was presented to Chávez during what appeared to be a routine interview about his time at AZ and his role at the beginning of the season. When the Go Ahead Eagles finish was mentioned, he recalled it with a smile: “Yes, that one was very good.”

He was then handed the Goal of the Month trophy and asked whether supporters had chosen the winner. Chávez joked that his Mexican brothers had not left him on his own, before going on to describe the move that produced the August prize.
