On Tuesday night, against Arsenal, Maxima Goffi took a significant first step at Lille. The 18-year-old was handed his first Champions League start, a landmark moment for a player whose route to the first team has unfolded almost entirely in LOSC colours.
Goffi grew up only 500 metres from the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium and has spent virtually all of his football development with Lille. Over recent seasons, he has emerged as one of the leading right-sided central defenders from France’s 2008 generation.
His selection against Arsenal offered Lille an early glimpse of a homegrown defender they may be able to build around in the coming years. For Goffi, the European stage arrived close to home — and with the club that has shaped his rise.
