The former Lyon forward had the chance to force an equaliser in the second leg of Corinthians’ Libertadores quarter-final against the Argentine side, after the first meeting had ended 1-1.
Estudiantes had appeared set to take the tie when Alexis Castro scored in the 87th minute. Corinthians were then awarded a penalty deep into added time, with seven minutes initially indicated by the referee.
Depay stepped up in the 101st minute, but failed to hit the target, striking his effort high into the crowd. The miss confirmed Corinthians’ elimination, with Estudiantes progressing after their 1-0 win in Brazil.
It was another difficult evening for the Dutch international, who has yet to score since agreeing a contract extension following lengthy and troubled negotiations with Corinthians.
