Madrid enters the international break with the derby still echoing across the city. Real Madrid left the Metropolitano beaten by Atlético de Madrid, surrendering three points and carrying away a deeper unease about a side that has not yet found either rhythm or consistency under José Mourinho.
Seven rounds into the Liga season, the gap to Barcelona has reached six points. Hansi Flick’s team have made a strong early move at the top, while Real Madrid face a pause in the calendar filled with questions over performances, selection and the construction of the squad.
There is criticism for every level of the club. The leading players have not approached the standard expected of them, while Mourinho has yet to establish regularity in either the team’s football or its results. Above them, Florentino Pérez and the sporting planning department are again under scrutiny, particularly over a midfield that was not sufficiently strengthened and still appears to contain structural shortcomings.
A troubling measure of effort
The most striking figure from the opening seven matches concerns distance covered. Real Madrid have recorded the lowest total in LaLiga, averaging 83.46 kilometres per game. It is a statistic that has sharpened the concern around commitment and intensity after the Metropolitano setback.
Elche lead the division in that measure with an average of 105.61 kilometres per match, and Barcelona sit second on 104.64 kilometres. The difference is considerable, and it leaves Madrid with more than a result to repair when their international players return to the capital.
For now, the derby has become a marker rather than simply another defeat: Atlético’s stadium offered a harsh view of a Madrid side whose individual quality has not been matched by collective application. The weeks after the break will determine whether the early alarm becomes a lasting crisis.
