SHENZHEN — Czechia returned to the summit of the Billie Jean King Cup on Sunday, sealing a 2-0 final victory over Ukraine as Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova delivered straight-sets singles wins for the nation’s 12th title.

Muchova gives Czechia the early edge
Muchova set the tone in the opening rubber, controlling the exchanges against Kalinina with clean serving and consistent pressure from the baseline. She broke serve twice in the first set and completed it in just over half an hour without being seriously tested on her own delivery.
Kalinina had entered the final after a productive week for Ukraine. She won both her singles and doubles matches during the quarter-final defeat of Belgium, then overcame Tyra Grant in the opening singles contest of Ukraine’s semi-final win against Italy.
But Muchova raised the standard when the trophy was on the line. Leading 3-2 in the second set, the Czech player pushed Kalinina deeper behind the baseline and gave her almost no opening on return. Kalinina collected only three return points across the set as Muchova closed the 6-2, 6-3 victory with a forehand winner.
Noskova withstands Svitolina to finish the final
The second singles match carried far more tension, with Svitolina making the first move by breaking Noskova for a 3-1 advantage. Noskova immediately struck back, however, surging to 0-40 in the following game and recovering the break. From there, she swept the last five games of the set to claim it 6-3.
Neither player allowed a break-point opportunity in the second set. All 12 games passed without reaching deuce, sending the final to a tiebreak that would determine whether a deciding doubles rubber was required.
Svitolina drew level at 3-3 with back-to-back aces before the change of ends, but Noskova moved to within touching distance of the title by creating three championship points. Svitolina erased the first two. On the third, Noskova forced her opponent wide and drove a forehand into the vacant court to complete a 6-3, 7-6(5) win.
Noskova fell to the court as Strycova and the Czech squad ran on to celebrate. The captain had been part of the Czech Republic sides that collected six Billie Jean King Cup crowns from 2011 through 2018, and now has another title in a new role.
Ukraine leave Shenzhen without the trophy but with their strongest run in the event. Playing in only their second Billie Jean King Cup Finals, they followed last year’s semi-final showing by defeating Belgium in the quarter-finals and two-time defending champions Italy in the semi-finals before reaching their first final.
