Muchova’s 360 Spin Sparks China Open Win Over Boulter

Karolina Muchova turned a point of pure improvisation into the decisive moment of her China Open second-round win over Katie Boulter, recovering from a difficult position in the first-set tiebreak before accelerating to a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory in Beijing.

With the tiebreak level at 3-3, the seventh-seeded Czech was forced to chase a ball behind her body. She completed a full turn as she reached it, then stretched wide to guide a sharply angled passing shot beyond Boulter. The exchange swung the match decisively: Muchova claimed every remaining point of the tiebreak and gave the Briton little opportunity to recover in the second set.

For a player whose all-court game regularly produces unusual solutions, the shot was striking enough to become an instant highlight. Muchova, however, initially needed to see the replay before recalling it in her post-match press conference.

“My spin shot?” she asked when it was raised. After watching the footage, the two-time major finalist said the movement had been instinctive rather than planned.

“I felt well positioned on my feet,” Muchova said. “It seemed like the only way to get the ball back because it was behind my body, so I turned with it naturally. I was not thinking about doing it beforehand. I would have preferred an easy backhand volley, but that was not possible. I’m glad I won the point.”

The win sends Muchova into the third round of the Beijing draw, where she will meet 29th seed Liudmila Samsonova. Muchova’s blend of touch, court coverage and instinct has again carried her through a tight opening set, and she will now look to convert that momentum into a deeper run at the China Open.
