Washington offered Spain a different kind of examination on Saturday: less about possession and polish, more about enduring the difficult stretches. Sonia Bermúdez’s side left the US capital with a 2-0 friendly victory over the Olympic champions, and with goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares central to a resolute second-half display.
A defensive answer in Washington
Spain were put under sustained pressure after the interval as Emma Hayes’ United States repeatedly found space behind the Spanish defensive line. Nanclares, the Athletic Club goalkeeper, proved decisive, turning away a penalty as well as dealing with the Americans’ continued attacks.
Bermúdez said the capacity to withstand such a period was an important part of the performance. Spain, she explained, must be able to defend deep and trust their work in the penalty area when their usual control on the ball is missing, their press arrives late or turnovers leave them poorly positioned.
- Spain won the Washington friendly 2-0.
- The United States applied prolonged pressure from the beginning of the second half.
- Adriana Nanclares saved a penalty during an imposing goalkeeping performance.
- Bermúdez said her staff had complete confidence that the Athletic Club player would deliver a strong match.
Nanclares rewards the staff’s faith
The Spain coach said Nanclares’ display had not surprised those inside the national set-up. They see her train and compete regularly for her club, Bermúdez noted, and regard every player called into the squad as capable of stepping in and performing at a high level.
The result also gave Spain’s coaching staff useful material beyond the final score. Bermúdez views the two-match American trip as preparation for the range of challenges her team will meet, particularly at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
Lessons before Brazil
Spain arrive in the United States as leaders of the FIFA rankings, while their hosts are second and hold the Olympic title. Bermúdez said her players must expect opponents to win possession at times and create periods in which Spain are forced to defend rather than dictate the game.
That was the value of the Washington encounter: a high-level test against a side able to unsettle Spain, and a reminder that tournament football will demand resilience as well as technical command.
Second meeting in Pennsylvania
The teams will meet again on Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania, completing Spain’s two-game friendly series against the reigning Olympic champions.
