Napoli used the extended international break to keep the group moving at Castel Volturno, but a heavily depleted side were beaten 2-0 by Avellino in a joint training session. With many senior players either away on national-team duty or working back from injury, Massimiliano Allegri turned to a number of Primavera players for the occasion.
A reduced Napoli group at Castel Volturno
The session offered Napoli a way to maintain match rhythm during the pause in Serie A, although the available squad bore little resemblance to the group Allegri will expect to have at his disposal once the league resumes.
- Several players were absent because of international commitments.
- Scott McTominay, Alisson, Frank Anguissa, Alex Meret, Luca Marianucci and Leonardo Spinazzola were continuing their recoveries from injuries.
- Antonio Nocerino watched the Primavera contingent closely as young players were brought into the senior set-up for the training match.
Among the first-team players involved were Lorenzo Lucca, Benoît Badiashile, Amir Rrahmani, Marin, Sam Beukema, Nikita Contini, David Neres and Matteo Politano.
Avellino find their goals after the interval
Avellino, coached by Alessandro Nesta, took the result in the second half. Venturi opened the scoring before Di Maggio added a second, giving the visitors a 2-0 victory in the Castel Volturno exercise.
The scoreline was secondary to Napoli’s need to manage a difficult break, with Allegri forced to balance the preparation of available first-team players with opportunities for the club’s younger ranks. Still, the afternoon underlined how thin the senior group has become while internationals are away and injured players work towards fitness.
Frosinone await Napoli’s return
Napoli’s attention will now move towards the resumption of the championship. Their next league fixture is at the Maradona, where they will host Alvini’s Frosinone on Saturday 10 October, with kick-off scheduled for 20:45.
