The Netherlands return to the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on 4 October for a UEFA Nations League League A meeting with Serbia, with Xavi Hernández’s side aiming to build on their opening three matchdays in a competition that keeps Europe’s leading international sides under the lights between club campaigns.

Xavi has selected a Netherlands starting side led by striker Mexx Meerdink. Bart Verbruggen is in goal, behind Denzel Dumfries, Ryan Gravenberch, Virgil van Dijk and Micky van de Ven. Joey Veerman and Tijjani Reijnders form the midfield base, while Samuel Summerville, Teun Koopmeiners and Noa Lang support Meerdink.
Xavi’s Netherlands selection
Meerdink arrives as the new centre-forward in Xavi’s plans after a rapid rise on the international stage. He made his Netherlands debut against Germany and has already struck twice against Serbia. The forward, son of former player Martijn Meerdink, had been a late addition to the squad but now has the chance to establish a more permanent role.
The appointment of Xavi has nevertheless prompted criticism from former Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder. Sneijder said the hiring was “strange”, arguing that the Spanish coach had benefited from too much assistance during his coaching qualification process and adding that he had limited experience as a manager.
