Amsterdam’s Johan Cruijff Arena will host a meeting shaped as much by renewal as by Nations League points when the Netherlands welcome Germany on Thursday 24 September. Both national sides arrive with new men in charge and the longer horizon of the 2030 World Cup already in view: Jürgen Klopp begins Germany’s next chapter, while Xavi Hernández takes over the Dutch project.

Germany turn towards 2030
Germany return after a World Cup campaign that ended in the round of 16 against Paraguay, an exit that prompted a swift reset. Klopp’s appointment places the emphasis on rebuilding a side seeking to restore its standing on the global stage by the 2030 finals.
There are useful recent numbers beneath the disappointment. Across their past five competitive fixtures, Germany have recorded three wins, one draw and one defeat, scoring 13 times while conceding six. Their most recent Nations League appearance, however, ended with a 2-0 loss to France in the match for third place.
The Germans also bring the happier memory from the teams’ last encounter. In the fourth round of the 2024 Nations League group phase, Jamie Leweling scored the only goal in a 1-0 Germany victory.
A Dutch reset under Xavi
The Netherlands are entering their own period of reorganisation, from the federation’s senior offices through to the national-team dressing room. Xavi inherits a programme with World Cup qualification, the Nations League and the European Championship on its route towards the next World Cup.
Before the Spanish coach’s arrival, the Dutch had gone five matches without losing in normal play, collecting three victories and two draws. Their World Cup elimination against Morocco came on penalties, while their last Nations League campaign concluded with a quarter-final defeat to Spain.
Thursday’s game therefore carries a familiar continental tension, but with unfamiliar figures on both benches. In Amsterdam, two of Europe’s traditional powers will measure the first steps of new eras against each other.
