NFL and Players Union Approve Drinking-Themed Celebrations

The NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed that celebrations mimicking the act of drinking a beverage will no longer draw penalties or other discipline.

The clarification removes a restriction that had treated those gestures as prohibited celebrations. Players can now use the drinking motion during touchdown celebrations or other on-field moments without being flagged or fined solely for that action.

Other celebration limits remain in place

The league and union also reiterated that several categories of celebrations are still banned. Players remain subject to discipline for gestures that are violent, sexually suggestive, offensive or otherwise violate the NFL’s standards for on-field conduct.

Celebrations also cannot be directed in a taunting manner at opponents, officials or fans. The NFL continues to regulate props, excessive delays and actions that could create a safety issue or disrupt the game.

The adjustment gives players one more approved option for spontaneous celebrations while leaving the league’s broader rules on sportsmanship and game administration unchanged.
