Opening night brings five games across the NHL on Tuesday, with championship banners, fresh captaincy, coaching firsts and a handful of new faces stepping directly into rivalry games. The spotlight begins in Raleigh and does not let up through a late West Coast finish in Las Vegas.
Carolina gets the first major ceremony of the night when the Hurricanes lift their 2026 Stanley Cup banner at Lenovo Center before facing the Florida Panthers at 5 p.m. ET. The matchup puts the past two Cup champions on the same ice: Carolina won last spring for its first title since 2006, while Florida captured consecutive championships in 2024 and 2025. The Hurricanes return with much of the group that completed last season’s run.
Florida arrives with a reworked edge. Brady Tkachuk will make his Panthers debut after the June 21 trade that brought him over from the Ottawa Senators, and he will line up alongside brother Matthew for the first time in the NHL. The Panthers missed the postseason last season after injuries tore through their roster, ending their chance at a third straight Cup.
The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs take over at 7 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena, where Gavin McKenna gets his first NHL game in one of hockey’s sharpest rivalries. Toronto selected McKenna first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, making him the club’s first No. 1 pick since Auston Matthews in 2016. The Maple Leafs have also reshaped their roster around him, adding former Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, a two-time Cup winner, and defenseman Darren Raddysh during the summer. On Monday, Toronto added another major piece by acquiring Columbus Blue Jackets scorer Kirill Marchenko.
Montreal opens with bigger expectations after reaching the Eastern Conference Final last season. The Canadiens added veteran forward Chris Kreider as they try to turn that playoff push into a deeper spring run.
At 8 p.m. ET, David Pastrnak takes the ice as Boston Bruins captain for the first time when the New York Rangers visit TD Garden. Pastrnak is entering his 13th NHL campaign and becomes Boston’s first captain since Brad Marchand was dealt to Florida on March 7, 2025. The Rangers bring a notable debut of their own, with Pavel Dorofeyev set to play his first game for New York after arriving from Vegas on June 26. Dorofeyev followed that trade by signing a seven-year, $77 million deal four days later.
Rangers coach Mike Sullivan reaches a personal milestone against a familiar opponent. His 1,000th game as an NHL head coach comes against the Bruins, the franchise that gave him his first League head-coaching opportunity in 2003. Sullivan is beginning his second season behind the New York bench.
Two new bench bosses meet in Edmonton at 10 p.m. ET. Manny Malhotra starts his NHL head-coaching career with the Vancouver Canucks after earning a promotion from Abbotsford, where he coached Vancouver’s American Hockey League affiliate for the past two seasons. His Abbotsford club won the Calder Cup in 2025.
Across from him, Mike Babcock returns to an NHL bench with the Edmonton Oilers. The 63-year-old has not coached an NHL game since Toronto dismissed him 23 games into the 2019-20 season. Babcock was hired by Columbus in 2023 but stepped down before the regular season began. He enters Edmonton with 700 career wins, 12th on the NHL’s all-time list, and 1,301 games coached, ranking 17th. His 17-season résumé includes stints with the Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings and Maple Leafs, plus a 2009 Stanley Cup with Detroit.
The night closes at T-Mobile Arena, where Patrick Kane returns to the Chicago Blackhawks for the first time since his 2023 departure. Chicago opens against the Vegas Golden Knights at 10:30 p.m. ET, with Kane back in a Blackhawks sweater after signing a two-year, $16 million contract on July 23. The 37-year-old spent the first 16 seasons of his 19-year NHL career in Chicago, helping deliver Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015 before his Feb. 28, 2023 trade to the Rangers. He spent the past three seasons with Detroit.
Kane remains near the top of Chicago’s record book, sitting third in franchise goals with 446 and second in assists with 779 and points with 1,225. Vegas begins its 10th NHL season with Ryan Craig making his debut as head coach. The Golden Knights have gone 7-1-1 in home openers.
