Madrid’s Metropolitano will stage the capital derby on Sunday with Obed Vargas back in Atlético de Madrid’s matchday plans. Diego Simeone has selected the Mexican midfielder for the visit of Real Madrid, offering him a possible first appearance for the club in several months.
The news from the club
Vargas has not played for Atlético during the 2026-27 campaign. His most recent outing came on 24 May, when Atlético faced Villarreal at La Cerámica.
After that match, he joined Mexico for the World Cup. Atlético then explored a loan move for the midfielder during the summer transfer window, but no agreement was completed and he remained in Simeone’s squad.
His inclusion for the derby does not guarantee minutes, with the Argentine coach holding several midfield options. Koke, Morten Hjulmand, Jorge Castillo, Rodrigo Mendoza, Álex Baena and Johnny Cardoso are all available as Atlético prepare for a demanding home fixture.
Derby date at the Metropolitano
Atlético host José Mourinho’s Real Madrid on Sunday 20 September at the Estadio Metropolitano. Kick-off is scheduled for 08:15 in central Mexico time.
For Vargas, the occasion could provide an unexpected route back into competitive action: a return in front of Atlético’s home support against the club’s principal city rival, should Simeone decide to turn to him.
