Madrid’s early-season rhythm has left Obed Vargas on the edge of Atlético de Madrid’s matchday picture. The Mexican midfielder is yet to play an official minute in 2026-27, a sharp change from his first campaign in red and white, when he collected more than 700 LaLiga minutes.
The uncertainty was already present during the summer window. Atlético considered a loan move that could have offered Vargas a clearer route to regular football, with Sevilla, Getafe and Alavés among the Spanish clubs discussed. No agreement was completed before registrations closed, however, and he remained in Diego Simeone’s squad at the Metropolitano.
There is little space in a crowded central midfield. Koke, Morten Hjulmand, Johnny Cardoso, Pablo Barrios and academy prospect Rodrigo Mendoza are all competing for Simeone’s attention, leaving Vargas to wait behind a deep group of options.
He was absent from Atlético’s first four squads of the season. Vargas then returned to the bench for the matches against Real Sociedad and Osasuna, but neither appearance brought his first minutes of the campaign.
Simeone sees value in the wait
Simeone has nevertheless spoken warmly about the 21-year-old’s response to the setback, stressing that Vargas has retained the attitude he showed on arriving in Madrid.
“He is working with optimism and the same enthusiasm he had from the first day,” the Atlético coach said. “He is humble, decent and hardworking. We will surely need to use him. He has to remain available and keep looking for that opportunity.”
For now, the international calendar may offer a different path. Rafael Márquez included Vargas in his first Mexico call-up as national-team coach despite the player’s lack of club action. It is a notable contrast: limited involvement in Spain, but continued confidence from El Tri.
Vargas has already appeared for Mexico at the World Cup, and this gathering could place him at the beginning of Márquez’s new cycle. Whether that international involvement supplies the match sharpness needed to alter his Atlético situation is one of the quieter questions following the Mexican midfielder from Madrid into the autumn.
