Paris Saint-Germain left Manchester with a 4-2 Champions League win, turning the Etihad Stadium into the setting for a forceful statement from the competition’s two-time reigning champions. Luis Enrique’s side built a three-goal advantage before the interval, resisted Manchester City’s second-half surge and preserved their perfect European record.
Quick facts
- Paris Saint-Germain won 4-2 away to Manchester City in the Champions League.
- Désiré Doué scored once and created Ousmane Dembélé’s goal within 99 seconds.
- Vitinha made it 3-0 before half-time with a curling finish.
- Erling Haaland scored twice, taking his Champions League total to 61 goals.
- Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a late penalty from former City forward Ferran Torres.
PSG set the tone early with sharp, flowing football. Doué struck from distance to open the scoring, then immediately became creator as Dembélé finished the move that doubled the visitors’ lead less than two minutes later.
City had little answer before the break. Vitinha completed a fine collective PSG attack with a measured curling effort, sending the French side into the dressing room 3-0 ahead.
Pep Guardiola altered his side after the restart and City finally found momentum. Haaland brought the home side back into the contest with a trademark header, raising hopes of a turnaround in east Manchester.
That recovery was checked by an unusual Donnarumma mistake. The PSG goalkeeper failed to deal with a long-range attempt from Maghnes Akliouche, allowing the ball to cross the line and restore a three-goal cushion for the visitors.
Haaland again gave City life, scoring his 61st goal in Champions League history to reduce the deficit to 4-2. He came close to completing a hat-trick in the closing stages, stretching for a late chance but unable to guide it on target.
There was one more twist when Matheus Nunes fouled Nuno Mendes in the City area. Ferran Torres, formerly of the Manchester club, stepped up for the penalty, but Donnarumma made the save to ensure PSG’s two-goal win.
PSG now return to domestic action against Strasbourg before a major Champions League meeting with Barcelona. City, meanwhile, will try to regroup at home to Ipswich Town in the Premier League before hosting AEK Athens in Europe.
