Olimpico Gives El Shaarawy a Standing Ovation in Roma vs Genoa

Roma’s meeting with Genoa became an evening of recognition for Stephan El Shaarawy, with the Olimpico giving one of its long-serving figures a response that carried beyond the match itself.

His name was warmly received when the teams were announced, and the appreciation grew into a full standing ovation when Daniele De Rossi replaced him after more than an hour. El Shaarawy answered by applauding every section of the stadium, visibly moved by the occasion.

There had been a contribution on the pitch as well. In the first half, the forward struck the crossbar at the end defended by the Curva Sud, the stand with which he has long shared a particularly close bond. Genoa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, a friend of El Shaarawy, was among those watching from the other side of the contest.

An Olimpico tribute

The applause was not simply for one performance against Genoa. It also reflected the affection built over El Shaarawy’s years in Roma colours, and the supporters’ gratitude for a player seen as having given himself fully to the club.

His decisive goal away to Verona, a result that helped Roma secure Champions League football, had not been celebrated at the Olimpico in the same way. The reception against Genoa offered the home crowd its opportunity to acknowledge that moment and his wider service to the side.

El Shaarawy’s family and long-time friends were present for the night, including his brother Manuel and his wife, Ludovica Pagani. Pagani, who works as a DJ, performed in the hospitality area before kick-off.

For De Rossi and Roma, it was a reminder that a league season is shaped not only by points and selections, but also by the relationship between a club and the players who become part of its identity. On this occasion, the Olimpico made its feelings clear.
