Olympiacos Come Back to Hand Imanol Alguacil First Win

Olympiacos found a first win under Imanol Alguacil at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, coming from behind to defeat Jagiellonia 2-1 after a difficult opening to the Spanish coach’s spell in Piraeus.

Olympiacos recover to give Alguacil first victory

José Luis Mendilibar’s time at Olympiacos has ended, with fellow Spaniard Alguacil now charged with guiding the Greek giants forward. His first match, a 1-0 defeat to OFI Crete on Saturday, offered an unpromising start.

The meeting with Poland’s Jagiellonia brought a different outcome, although Olympiacos again had to work hard for it. The home side had more of the ball and created the clearer chances, but trailed after 20 minutes.

Quick facts

  • Olympiacos beat Jagiellonia 2-1 at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
  • It was Imanol Alguacil’s first victory in charge.
  • Szmyt put the Polish visitors ahead in the 20th minute.
  • Armando González equalised shortly before half-time.
  • Roman Yaremchuk scored the winning goal in the 84th minute.

Szmyt’s early strike gave Jagiellonia a lead to defend, and the visitors did so stubbornly for much of the night. Olympiacos levelled just before the interval through Armando González, restoring belief around the stadium.

After the break, the Greek side increased the pressure but repeatedly found Abramowicz in their way. The Polish goalkeeper was central to Jagiellonia’s resistance as Olympiacos searched for a decisive second goal.

The breakthrough arrived six minutes from time. Ukraine forward Roman Yaremchuk, formerly of Valencia, struck in the 84th minute to send the Karaiskakis into celebration and give Alguacil some early breathing room.
