Olympiacos Stun Marseille in Europa League Win Under Alguacil

Marseille’s Vélodrome was left silent by a Greek side comfortable in adversity as Olympiacos, coached by Spain’s Imanol Alguacil, claimed a 1-0 Europa League win over Olympique de Marseille.

Santiago Hezze supplied the decisive moment in the seventh minute, turning in from a corner to give the visitors an early advantage. The Argentine’s goal allowed Olympiacos to reshape the evening around discipline, patience and defensive resistance.

Quick facts

  • Olympique de Marseille 0-1 Olympiacos in Europa League matchday two.
  • Santiago Hezze scored the only goal in the seventh minute from a corner.
  • Olympiacos have six points from two matches.
  • The Greek club have now won four consecutive games in all competitions.
  • Marseille remain on zero points and sit outside the top 24 places.

With the score in their favour, Olympiacos ceded much of the ball to Marseille and invited the home side to find a route back into the contest. The French team pressed harder after the interval, driven on by its own stadium, but could not unlock the visiting back line.

Alguacil’s team absorbed the periods of greatest pressure and made Marseille increasingly frustrated. Defensive solidity has been a clear feature since the Basque coach’s arrival, with Olympiacos producing a run of low-scoring matches while continuing to build momentum.

The result gives the Piraeus club a valuable continental boost, taking them to a maximum six points after two rounds. For Marseille, the problem is more immediate: they have no points and face a trip to Sturm Graz next week.
