At Arena Barueri, Palmeiras carried the momentum of a dramatic continental week back into Brazil’s title race, beating Red Bull Bragantino 2-0 to move provisionally to the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro. Maurício and Argentine full-back Agustín Giay supplied the goals for Abel Ferreira’s side, who remain in contention on three fronts.
A week of momentum in São Paulo
The win came only days after Palmeiras edged Fluminense on penalties to secure a place in the 2026 Copa Libertadores final. The São Paulo club will meet Estudiantes de La Plata in Montevideo on 28 November, while its domestic ambitions remain fully alive.
- Palmeiras lead the Brazilian league with 69 points.
- They stand two points ahead of Flamengo, who host Atlético Mineiro on Monday.
- The club has reached the Libertadores final and can still qualify for the Copa do Brasil final.
- Atlético Mineiro arrive in Rio in strong form after reaching the Copa Sudamericana final, where they will face Montevideo City Torque in Barranquilla on 21 November.
Maurício takes the second chance
Ferreira left Vitor Roque and Flaco López out of his starting line-up, placing much of the attacking burden on Ramón Sosa. The Paraguayan forward endured a difficult first half: one of his goals was ruled out for offside, before he sent a penalty wide.
Palmeiras were handed another spot-kick shortly before the interval, however, and Maurício made no mistake. The Brazil-born Paraguay international converted to give the home side a deserved advantage.
Giay settles Bragantino resistance
Bragantino pushed harder after the restart and briefly tested Palmeiras’ control, but the hosts’ greater depth eventually told. Flaco López entered from the bench and combined in a move involving Colombian midfielder Jhon Arias before Giay arrived to finish the attack.
The Argentine’s goal put the result beyond doubt and completed a 2-0 victory in the 32nd round. Palmeiras now wait for Flamengo’s response, with the league lead temporarily theirs as the road to Montevideo also comes into view.
