In Poland, where the Women’s Under-20 World Cup runs from 5 to 27 September, the tournament has reopened a familiar fault line in the international game: whether young players should have to choose between club contracts, college seasons and a World Cup for their country.
A group of prominent current and former players has sent an open letter to FIFA asking for future Women’s Under-20 World Cups to be placed inside an official international window. Alex Morgan, Marta, Crystal Dunn, Lindsey Heaps and Kennedy Fuller are among the signatories, alongside other players from across the women’s game.
A tournament outside the release calendar
The present competition overlaps with domestic club campaigns and the United States college season. Because the Under-20 World Cup does not sit in a designated FIFA release period, professional clubs are not bound by the same requirement to make their players available to national teams.
That leaves eligible footballers facing a conflict between their employment commitments and a chance to appear at a youth World Cup. Some players who could have travelled to Poland have been unable to take part.

The signatories are asking for that arrangement to be reconsidered, arguing that the expansion of women’s football must be matched by a calendar that permits emerging players to represent their countries without sacrificing their club place.
