Portugal Seal Nations League Quarter-Final Spot with Norway Comeback

Portugal booked their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with a 2-1 comeback against Norway at the Estádio do Dragão, where a crowd of 49,876 watched Jorge Jesus’s side preserve a perfect group record. Norway, led by Erling Haaland, had briefly put themselves in position for a valuable point, only to leave Portugal with their qualification outlook under greater pressure.

A set-piece exchange changes the evening

Both teams created openings before the interval, although Portugal carried the greater attacking threat. The breakthrough did not arrive until the 36th minute, when Norway turned a dead-ball situation into a spectacular opener.

  • Kristoffer Ajer struck Norway ahead in the 36th minute, meeting the ball from the edge of the area and driving it into the top corner beyond Diogo Costa.
  • Portugal answered two minutes later through João Cancelo. Following a long throw that created the kind of congestion usually associated with a corner, Cancelo unleashed a fierce effort from outside the box to make it 1-1.
  • The sides went into half-time level after the rapid exchange, with neither able to add another goal before the break.

Haaland departs as Portugal find their winner

Haaland’s first opportunity came only in the 60th minute and was not a clear chance. Norway’s captain then signalled muscular discomfort shortly afterwards, and Jørgen Strand Larsen replaced him in the 67th minute.

Without their principal forward, Norway struggled to regain direction as Portugal continued to search for the decisive moment. It arrived in the 79th minute through Gonçalo Ramos.

Vitinha began the move with a precise long pass, João Félix timed his run to collect it and supplied Ramos with the finish. The sequence reflected the influence of both Vitinha and Félix on a night when Portugal had eventually converted their territorial promise into three points.

Late dismissal brings a tense finish

Portugal’s task became more complicated five minutes from time when Francisco Conceição was sent off. Conceição had been fouled for a penalty, but had already been selected to make way for Neto. While leaving the pitch, he spoke to referee Maurizio Mariani and received a second yellow card, followed immediately by red.

Portugal held on with 10 players during the closing stages, confirming both top place in the group and a quarter-final berth. Norway, meanwhile, were left to regret losing the draw that had appeared within reach.
