Union Berlin’s difficult night in Munich ended with a social-media punchline aimed well beyond the Bundesliga. After conceding seven goals to Bayern, the visitors turned their attention to Lamine Yamal’s Ballon d’Or comments — and to the two Bayern forwards who had just dismantled them.
Union Berlin respond after Bayern rout
- Lamine Yamal, the 19-year-old Barcelona winger, said on Friday that the Ballon d’Or should go to the world’s best player rather than simply the player who won the Champions League or “scored 80 goals”. His remarks were widely seen as a reference to Harry Kane, although he did not name the England striker.
- Later that evening, Bayern Munich scored seven against Union Berlin at home.
- Michael Olise struck a hat-trick, while Kane added two goals in the Bavarian side’s emphatic victory.
- Union responded with humour on X after the final whistle, backing both Bayern attackers in the Ballon d’Or discussion.
The Berlin club wrote that the “19-year-old from Barcelona” might have been better off keeping quiet, adding that Kane and Olise were on fire and showing Ballon d’Or-level quality.
It was a sarcastic response from a side left on the wrong end of a seven-goal beating, with Olise and Kane providing the most brutal evidence of Bayern’s attacking power on the night.
