Paris offered Barcelona their sternest European evening of the season, with Paris Saint-Germain turning a late deadlock into a 4-2 victory at the Parc des Princes. The result ended Barcelona’s unbeaten start and left Hansi Flick’s side returning to Spain with a demanding Clasico against Real Madrid next on the calendar.
PSG pull clear after an even contest
Barcelona had periods of control in the French capital and were level at 2-2 until the 80th minute. But mistakes in the closing stages allowed the reigning two-time Champions League winners to break away and collect all three points in the third matchday of the league phase.
- PSG remain perfect after three matches, leading the competition on nine points.
- Barcelona slipped to fifth place, with Wednesday’s remaining fixtures capable of pushing them lower.
- The defeat was Barcelona’s first of the campaign.
- Despite the final score, Barcelona stayed level with PSG deep into the final quarter of the match.
Flick sees a lesson rather than a crisis
Flick accepted that PSG had been the stronger team across the 90 minutes, but the Barcelona coach resisted any suggestion that October should define his side’s ambitions. He pointed instead to the lessons available from facing a leading European opponent away from home.
“It was an excellent game involving two very good teams,” Flick said after the match. “PSG showed they are ahead of us. We lost, but we can learn from it. Mistakes happen, while what we have done over recent weeks has been very positive. It was never going to be easy here.”
The German added that Barcelona must take the experience forward, stressing that trophies are not decided in autumn. “It is October; titles are not won now. The Champions League is won in June.”
Raphinha keeps Barcelona’s focus on the larger campaign
Captain Raphinha also treated the loss as a difficult but useful test. The Brazilian recognised PSG’s strength in front of their home crowd and said Barcelona had known defeat was a possible outcome against the European champions.
“We knew this could happen,” Raphinha said. “We were playing the two-time European champions in their stadium, with their supporters behind them. They are obviously a very strong side. We wanted to leave with a win, or at least a point, but this is not a disaster. We have lost three points.”
For Raphinha, taking PSG to the closing stages while still level was evidence that Barcelona can contend in this season’s Champions League.
- He described the encounter as a valuable examination for Barcelona.
- He believes the team showed it can compete for the European title.
- Barcelona now shift their attention back to Spain and the visit of Real Madrid in LaLiga matchday 10.
Madrid awaits after the Paris setback
Barcelona’s return from Paris leads directly into one of the season’s defining domestic fixtures. Victory over Real Madrid would open a potential nine-point gap over their historic rivals and strengthen Barcelona’s pursuit of a third consecutive league championship.
