Napoli Captain Di Lorenzo Hits Back at Bruscolotti’s Leadership Criticism

Napoli’s present and past have collided in public, with former captain Giuseppe Bruscolotti questioning the authority within the current dressing room and Giovanni Di Lorenzo replying sharply on social media. It is a dispute between leaders from distant eras of the club, stretching from Bruscolotti’s years in blue to Di Lorenzo’s captaincy during the side’s third Scudetto campaign.

Bruscolotti questions Napoli’s leadership

Bruscolotti, who spent 16 years as a Napoli player between 1972 and 1988, spoke at a Panini event about what he sees as a shortage of commanding figures in the squad.

  • He described Romelu Lukaku’s departure as a damaging loss, arguing that the forward had been the one personality capable of holding the group together.
  • He said Lukaku brought charisma to the team and suggested Napoli no longer have a similarly representative figure.
  • Bruscolotti also criticised Kevin De Bruyne, placing him among players he felt were insufficiently invested in the club’s situation.
  • His most pointed remarks were aimed at Di Lorenzo, whom he praised as a player but judged harshly away from the pitch.

“Losing Lukaku was not what Napoli needed,” Bruscolotti said. “For me, he was the only one who kept the team united. De Bruyne is one of several who do not really care, and there is no leading figure. The captain performs well on the field, but beyond that he offers very little.”

Di Lorenzo answers as Napoli captain

Di Lorenzo did not leave the remarks unanswered. The Napoli captain responded through Instagram, defending the squad and taking issue with criticism delivered from outside the club.

“Maybe I am very little,” Di Lorenzo wrote, “but when I am 75 and no longer captain, I will not attack Napoli’s dressing room without knowing what is happening inside it, only to create unnecessary criticism. I remembered you differently when we met at the Centenary celebration. A hug.”

The exchange has exposed the tension that can arise when former captains assess the standards of a new generation. Bruscolotti remains a major figure from an earlier Napoli, while Di Lorenzo carries the armband for the side trying to define its own place in the club’s history.

A captain shaped by the third Scudetto

Di Lorenzo is now in his seventh season at Napoli. He has worn the captain’s armband since 2022-23, the season in which the club celebrated its third league title.

  • Bruscolotti represented Napoli from 1972 until 1988.
  • Di Lorenzo became captain in the 2022-23 campaign.
  • His leadership has therefore been tied to the Scudetto-winning group that restored Napoli to the summit of Italian football.

For now, the argument is one of words rather than consequences on the pitch. But it has brought an old Napoli question back into view: in difficult moments, who speaks for the dressing room, and who has the standing to judge it?
