PSG Forward Ferran Torres Leaves Spain Squad With Left Ankle Problem

Spain’s camp has lost Ferran Torres on the eve of its Nations League meeting with the Czech Republic, with the Paris Saint-Germain forward sent back to begin recovery work on his left ankle.

Quick facts

  • Ferran Torres has withdrawn from the Spain squad because of persistent discomfort in his left ankle.
  • The PSG attacker had still trained and played despite the pain.
  • Real Madrid forward Carlos Espi has been called up as his replacement.
  • Spain host the Czech Republic in Oviedo on Saturday before travelling to Croatia on Tuesday.

Torres left the national-team group on Friday after medical concerns intensified ahead of Saturday night’s fixture in Oviedo. Spain decided not to risk the forward as the ankle symptoms continued.

The Spanish federation said Torres had initially been able to take part in training sessions and matches despite the issue. However, the ongoing pain led staff to remove him from the squad in order to prioritise his rehabilitation.

PSG have been kept informed throughout the situation, with the French champions now awaiting the player’s return and the next assessment of the injury.

Carlos Espi, the Real Madrid attacker, takes Torres’s place in the group for the Czech Republic match. Spain will then travel to Split, where Croatia await on Tuesday.
