Bologna’s decision to turn to Matteo Darmian gives Raffaele Palladino an experienced reference point at a delicate stage of the season. The former Inter defender arrives with a substantial career behind him, but Andrea Ranocchia believes the move has come later than it should have: in his view, Darmian has remained a player capable of helping an ambitious Serie A side.
A late arrival for a club seeking stability
- Bologna’s season had already been unsettled by the dismissal of Domenico Tedesco, with Palladino asked to take charge of a group whose league position has fallen below expectations.
- Palladino, himself needing to establish his methods quickly, now has Darmian available as the defender begins a new chapter in Bologna after years at Inter.
- Ranocchia, who shared an Inter dressing room with Darmian, said he was surprised that the player had only now found a club. “He has consistently performed well,” he said. “He is experienced and he is the sort of player I would always want alongside me.”
The move asks a familiar question of a player approaching 37: not simply whether he can still run, but whether he retains the appetite for the daily demands of elite football. Ranocchia sees Darmian’s choice to continue as an answer in itself. A player does not seek another challenge, he argued, unless he believes he still has the physical and mental resources to contribute.
“If he has chosen to carry on, it means he feels he still has something to offer,” Ranocchia said. “He is a strong player, one for a major club.”
More than a defender’s experience
Ranocchia’s assessment is shaped by friendship as well as shared professional experience, but it also reflects the qualities Bologna may need during a rebuild under Palladino. Darmian has played for Inter and Manchester United, having first developed in Milan’s academy, and his former teammate regards that background as valuable beyond the pitch.
“Top clubs teach you a great deal in terms of mentality,” Ranocchia said. “You approach every match trying to win it.”
That mentality, he believes, can influence a younger group. Darmian’s standing and conduct can give him a natural authority among less experienced teammates, while his reputation for reliability should help a side trying to find rhythm after a coaching change.
Ranocchia described him as an intelligent footballer who rarely produces a poor match and can also provide goals. His praise extended to Darmian’s character: “His human qualities are a 10. I would take 11 players like him.”
Options for Palladino
Darmian’s versatility is another part of the attraction. Ranocchia said his former colleague can cover every role across the defensive line, regardless of whether Bologna line up with three, five or four at the back. His positioning, concentration and ability to make an impact from the bench were highlighted as particular strengths.
That flexibility could ease the task of integrating a player who has joined after the season has begun. Ranocchia expects no difficulty on that front, insisting Darmian’s personality will make the transition immediate.
“He is an excellent person in the way he deals with people,” he said. “He will settle in within a second.”
Palladino’s demanding new chapter
Ranocchia also knows Palladino from their younger days together at Genoa. He said he could not have predicted then that Palladino would become a coach, but remembered a grounded and thoughtful teammate. Their paths nearly crossed again at Monza, and Ranocchia believes Palladino has built a positive coaching career.
The Bologna coach inherits a side that, in Ranocchia’s view, possesses more quality than its current position suggests. The immediate aim is to restore order and move up the table rather than chase distant promises.
European qualification remains a difficult target, Ranocchia said, given the competition from Inter, Napoli, Roma, Como, Milan, Juventus, Atalanta and Lazio. Yet he believes Bologna can still produce a respectable campaign and play attractive football.
For that to happen, Darmian’s arrival may matter less as a headline than as a practical intervention: an accomplished defender, a calm presence in the dressing room, and another experienced hand for Palladino as Bologna attempt to give their season a clearer direction.
