Philadelphia’s margin for error is down to the final weekend after a 2-0 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park left the Phillies still waiting to lock up a National League Wild Card berth.

The Rays gave themselves all the room they needed with single runs in the opening two innings. Philadelphia, now 87-73, has dropped three straight and 13 of its past 21 games, turning what once looked routine into a closing-weekend scramble.
Bryce Harper offered the Phillies their clearest opening in the sixth. His soft single fell into shallow right-center, and he reached first with a clap toward the home dugout. With runners at first and second and nobody out, Philadelphia could not turn the moment into a run.
Offense leaves another opening on the field
The mood tightened inning by inning. Fans reacted loudly after inning-ending strikeouts by Trea Turner in the third and Brandon Marsh in the fourth, with the club again unable to find the timely swing.
Philadelphia has been held to three runs or fewer in nine of its last 12 contests. Interim manager Don Mattingly managed Friday like a game already carrying October stakes, sending Bryan De La Cruz to hit for Marsh when Tampa Bay left-hander Cam Booser was on the mound in the sixth. Marsh has struggled badly at the plate since the All-Star break.
Mattingly also used closer Jhoan Duran in the eighth despite being behind by two. Duran kept Tampa Bay from adding on, but the Phillies never found a way back.
Weekend rotation pressure
Philadelphia had hoped to celebrate a berth Friday with a win and an Arizona loss. Instead, the club left the ballpark needing any combination of two Phillies victories and Diamondbacks defeats to reach the postseason.
Saturday now becomes a must-win opportunity, with Philadelphia set for a bullpen game because left-hander Jesús Luzardo is on the injured list. If the Phillies cannot win Saturday and Arizona does not lose, Zack Wheeler would be lined up for the regular-season finale Sunday.
That would alter the preferred October plan. The Phillies want Wheeler ready for Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series on Tuesday, but a Sunday assignment would take that option away. For now, the clubhouse has one straightforward job: win the next one and avoid making the last day even heavier.
