Parrot said the club had chosen what it views as Lens’s established footballing principles after two visions within the staff could no longer coexist. He insisted Cahuzac’s appointment was the logical response at that point, not an operation planned beforehand.
The general manager pushed back strongly against accusations aimed at sporting director Leca, who is close to Cahuzac away from football. Parrot said Leca’s decisions are made within the club’s collective structure and are also endorsed by himself and owner Joseph Oughourlian.
“People can question our intentions, but they should not suggest there was a deliberate scheme,” Parrot said. He added that Leca had worked hard to support and protect Toppmöller before the situation became unsustainable.
Parrot also argued that Cahuzac should be judged as a coach, not simply as Leca’s friend. The new Lens manager has worked under Franck Haise and Régis Le Bris, and had already been considered a potential future first-team coach when he joined the club.
Leca presented Cahuzac’s Lens background as central to the decision. He pointed to the former captain’s understanding of the intensity expected around the club, as well as his coaching education under Haise, Le Bris and Olivier Pantaloni.
“It made sense to turn to someone who knows this club and what its supporters demand,” Leca said, describing Cahuzac as the right man to restore something Lens felt it was beginning to lose.
The sporting director accepted that supporters and observers may link the appointment to their friendship. But he said praise for Cahuzac’s coaching potential had existed long before this week’s decision.
“He is my friend, that is true,” Leca said. “Inside the club, though, I am his superior and Benjamin Parrot is mine.” He added that their personal relationship belongs outside the training ground and offices.
Leca recalled facing similar suspicion in 2019, when Florent Ghisolfi and Cahuzac arrived at Lens and some accused the club of bringing in friends. He said the subsequent work of those involved had answered that criticism.
Cahuzac said the suggestion of cronyism did not anger him personally, but disappointed him because it affected the institution. He stressed that Leca is not the sole decision-maker at Lens and would not appoint a coach without the required ability.
For Cahuzac, the immediate task is now on the pitch: meeting the objectives set by Lens and proving that Tuesday’s abrupt change was about the club’s direction, rather than old friendships.
