Madrid is waiting on Kylian Mbappé after the French forward returned from international duty with a left-knee injury, interrupting a prolific opening stretch for both club and country.
The news from the club
Real Madrid have diagnosed Mbappé with hyperextension of the posterior capsule in his left knee following medical examinations. The club did not attach a precise timetable to his absence and said his return will depend on how the injury develops.
In its medical update, Madrid confirmed that tests carried out on the player had identified the posterior-capsule hyperextension and that he remains under observation.
The problem arose during France’s UEFA Nations League opener against Turkey. Mbappé had scored the match’s goal before beginning to show discomfort in his left knee. After an understated celebration and several minutes of visible concern, he went to the ground close to the hour mark and called for treatment.
France’s medical staff opted for an immediate substitution rather than expose him to further risk. Mbappé reached the bench, with Zinedine Zidane in charge, and received further attention there before returning to Madrid for assessment.
The calendar ahead
Madrid have not specified how long the forward will be unavailable. Injuries of this kind can require around two to three weeks of recovery, leaving Mbappé out of the remainder of the international window and putting his involvement against Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu in serious doubt.
The setback comes as Mbappé leads Madrid’s scoring and remains France’s principal attacking reference point. Across his club and international appearances this season, the forward has scored eight goals and supplied two assists.
