Real Madrid Fans Take Negreira Protest to Champions League Stage

Real Madrid supporters used a Champions League night against RB Leipzig to take their protest over the Negreira case beyond Spain, unveiling an English-language banner during the second half at the Santiago Bernabéu.

A message aimed at Europe

The banner appeared in the Fans Stand behind one of the goals after the interval, carrying the words: “No impunity for Negreira”. Its lettering was in Barcelona colours, underlining the case that has become a major source of tension in Spanish football.

Madrid have also brought the matter to UEFA’s attention, and the display turned a European fixture into a public appeal directed at the wider continental game. Television cameras showed the banner, while it was also displayed on the stadium’s video screens around the Bernabéu.

Chants accompany the banner

The message remained in view for roughly five minutes as supporters added a series of chants directed at Spanish football’s leading institutions and figures.

  • “Laporta is still paying.”
  • “Tebas, leave now.”
  • “Barcelona, corruption.”
  • “Corruption in the Federation.”
  • “Negreira is still refereeing.”

Protest ends after Güler strike

The banner was taken down as Arda Güler scored to make it 2-0. By then, the Bernabéu crowd had ensured that the dispute surrounding the Negreira scandal had been placed firmly alongside the football on a Champions League stage.
