Madrid’s derby fallout will not move from the touchline to the disciplinary room, with the referees’ union AESAF and the Technical Committee of Referees’ legal department deciding against filing a complaint over José Mourinho’s comments after Real Madrid’s meeting with Atlético de Madrid.
The matter was considered throughout Monday after Mourinho criticised both the match referee, Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias, and VAR official Daniel Trujillo Suárez following the capital clash. Although the remarks were reviewed with the possibility of referring them to the federation’s Disciplinary Committee, no action will be taken for now.
Mourinho questioned Ortiz Arias’s standing and experience, noting that the Madrid-based official is not an international referee and, at the age of 41, had not taken charge of a major fixture. His criticism was particularly pointed towards Trujillo Suárez, the official in the VOR room, with the Real Madrid coach recalling decisions and incidents involving his side during the previous season.
Had a disciplinary case been opened and upheld, Mourinho could have faced a suspension of up to four matches. The potential financial penalty ranged from €601 to €3,005.06.
The decision leaves the Portuguese coach free of immediate punishment, while the debate around officiating in one of European football’s most combustible city rivalries remains outside the federation’s formal disciplinary process.
