Mexican players were spread across UEFA’s Europa League and Conference League programme, from Andorra to Copenhagen and Greece, but the night offered more brief appearances than starring roles.
Rodrigo Huescas returned to continental action as Copenhagen defeated Braga in the Conference League. The Mexican full-back entered in the 69th minute, with little time to influence the result.
Quick facts
- Anwar Hernández made his Conference League debut for Andorra’s Club d’Escaldes.
- Hernández lost his marker for Mjällby’s second goal in a 2-0 defeat.
- Huescas came on in the 69th minute of Copenhagen’s win over Braga.
- Mateo Chávez entered in the 75th minute as AZ Alkmaar beat Hapoel Be’er Sheva 2-1.
- Armando “Hormiga” González played 24 minutes for Olympiacos against Marseille.
For Hernández, the first appearance in the Conference League came with a difficult moment. The Mexico City-born central defender was caught on a cross delivered from Mjällby’s left flank, allowing Axel Noren to score the goal that sealed the 2-0 result.
Club d’Escaldes could not find a route back after Noren’s finish, leaving Hernández and the Andorran side to reflect on a costly lapse in a major European fixture.
In the Europa League, Mateo Chávez was introduced for AZ Alkmaar in the second half against Hapoel Be’er Sheva. He came on in the 75th minute, at the point AZ scored the decisive goal in their 2-1 victory.
González again began among the Olympiacos substitutes and was given 24 minutes against Marseille. His only attempt was stopped by goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange, although the Greek club still collected the three points.
The evening therefore brought four Mexican involvements across UEFA competition, but only Huescas, Chávez and González were on the winning side, while Hernández’s debut ended in defeat in Sweden.
