Roma will use the international break to keep three regulars close to Trigoria, with Wesley, Donyell Malen and Bryan Cristante all ruled out of their respective national-team commitments by fitness concerns.
Gian Piero Gasperini will therefore have three additional first-team players available on the training ground as the club prepares for the next phase of the Serie A season. None of the problems is described as serious, but Roma have chosen not to take unnecessary risks during a period in which recovery can shape the following Sunday afternoons.
Wesley remains in Rome after thigh issue
Wesley felt discomfort in his right thigh during the match against Inter and will not join Brazil for its friendlies against Australia and India. The Brazilian had already been forced to miss the World Cup call-up, and the decision to remain at Trigoria is intended to ensure that the latest issue is fully managed rather than aggravated.
The club’s approach is cautious: there is no indication of a major injury, but there is little value in exposing the player to further strain in non-competitive international fixtures.
Malen and Cristante also unavailable
Malen will miss the Netherlands’ Nations League matches because of a physical problem, while Cristante has withdrawn after developing lower-back pain.
For Gasperini, their presence in Rome gives the coaching staff a larger group with which to work during the pause. The international break will not offer complete rest, but it does provide time to monitor the three players closely and prepare them for Roma’s return to league action.
