Sabalenka Storms Into China Open Third Round With Dominant Zarazua Win

Aryna Sabalenka made an emphatic return to competition at the China Open, overpowering Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-3 in 62 minutes to move into the third round of the WTA 1000 event in Beijing.

Playing for the first time since reaching the US Open final, the world No. 2 struck 36 winners on the Beijing hard courts—two more than Zarazua managed in total points across the match. Sabalenka did not face a break point and sealed a commanding opening victory in her latest bid to go beyond the quarterfinal stage at this tournament.

“I’m very pleased with the standard I produced,” Sabalenka said. “There is not much I can be unhappy about. My concentration, physical condition and overall performance were good, and I’m glad to be through.”

Sabalenka takes control early

Sabalenka immediately established the pace with aggressive returning. A forehand return winner earned the first break for 2-0, and another clean forehand return gave her a second break as she moved ahead 5-1.

She created set point with a backhand winner, then finished the 31-minute opener with a forehand passing shot.

Zarazua opened the second set with a hold, but Sabalenka responded by winning 12 consecutive points to build a 3-1 advantage. The Mexican remained close enough to apply some scoreboard pressure, yet Sabalenka shut the door with a love service game containing four winners, including three aces. She then broke once more to complete the straight-sets result.

Serving numbers underline dominant display

Sabalenka lost only three points behind her first delivery, winning 22 of 25 for an 88 percent success rate. She also claimed 10 of 14 second-serve points, a 71 percent return.

Her 11 aces came without conceding a single break opportunity. The victory also pushed Sabalenka to a 2-0 WTA Tour head-to-head record against Zarazua.

The previous meeting came in Brisbane last year, where Sabalenka beat Zarazua before going on to lift the title. Beijing offers another opportunity to improve on a tournament record that includes three quarterfinal appearances but no semifinal.

China record and season form

With Friday’s win, Sabalenka’s record at WTA events in China, excluding team competition, rose to 43-9. Her 82.7 percent winning rate in the country trails only Coco Gauff at 88.0 percent, along with Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek, both on 83.3 percent.

She also owns the best match-winning percentage on the WTA Tour this season. Sabalenka stands at 47-9 in 2026, a rate of 83.9 percent, ahead of Karolina Muchova’s 40-10 mark.

At WTA 1000 level, Sabalenka’s plus-99 winners-to-unforced-errors differential is the strongest on tour this year. Her plus-22 margin against Zarazua added further distance between her and Clara Tauson, who is next on plus-22.

Next in the Beijing draw

Sabalenka will meet 26th seed Nikola Bartunkova for a place in the fourth round. The Czech advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Magdalena Frech.

The pair have met once before, in the Berlin quarterfinals earlier this season. Sabalenka escaped that contest after trailing 6-2, 4-0, rallying to reach the semifinals.
