Serie A’s Champions League return after the international break will place Inter and Napoli under two different sets of European memories on Tuesday night, with the match officials now confirmed for both fixtures.
Inter meet Bruges with Saggi in charge
Inter will host Bruges at San Siro in the second round of the Champions League league phase. Norway’s Rohit Saggi has been appointed referee for the evening fixture.
It will be Saggi’s first match involving the Nerazzurri, as Inter resume their European campaign in front of their home supporters following the pause for national-team football.
Napoli return to Villarreal under Siebert
Napoli travel to Spain to face Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica, where German referee Daniel Siebert will take charge.
Siebert has already officiated Napoli twice in Europe, and neither occasion produced a result that has been remembered fondly at Castel Volturno.
The first came in the 2020-21 Europa League round of 32. Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli defeated Granada 2-1 in the second leg, but the result could not overturn their 2-0 loss in Spain, ending the club’s campaign.
The more recent meeting was far harsher. Napoli suffered a 6-2 defeat away to PSV Eindhoven during last season’s Champions League league phase, one of the club’s most difficult European nights in recent years.
Tuesday therefore brings a fresh continental test for both Italian sides: Inter beginning a new relationship with their Norwegian official, and Napoli returning to the stage with an experienced referee whose previous games involving the Azzurri carry unwelcome history.
