Seville’s La Cartuja provided a difficult European night for Porto, but Santiago Giménez offered Francesco Farioli a reason for encouragement in the closing stages of the defeat to Real Betis. The Mexican forward made a short appearance in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase and created two notable opportunities despite limited time on the pitch.
Giménez offers Porto a late lift
- Porto travelled to Seville for their UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture against Real Betis at Estadio de La Cartuja.
- Betis won the match, leaving the Portuguese side to reflect on a defeat away from home.
- Giménez entered with only a small portion of the game remaining but made an immediate attacking contribution.
- The striker had two promising chances, with the Betis goalkeeper producing a major save to deny him on one occasion.
Farioli said Giménez had supplied precisely the kind of contribution Porto required. “Santiago had a very positive impact today,” the Italian coach said. “He had two good chances in the few minutes he played, and the goalkeeper made an extraordinary save for one of them. He gave us what we needed, not only in attack but also for the team.”
Work still ahead in Porto
The Porto manager also stressed that the 24-year-old must continue building fitness and familiarity after arriving recently. Farioli believes the forward needs further training time, improvement and a return to full rhythm alongside his new teammates.
“He is a player who arrived late and needs to work, train, improve and find his physical condition,” Farioli added. “I am sure he will help us.”
A goal drought beyond one European night
The encouraging cameo comes during a demanding spell for Giménez, whose recent career has been affected by injuries, uneven form and club changes. Once a central figure in Mexico’s attack, he is still seeking the consistency that made him one of the country’s leading forwards.
- His only Porto goal came on 12 September, against Casa Pia AC in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.
- His most recent goal for Mexico was scored on 9 September 2025, in a friendly against South Korea before the 2026 World Cup.
For Porto, the next task is to turn Farioli’s positive assessment into sustained output. Giménez’s movement in Seville did not alter the result, but it suggested that the Mexican striker may be edging closer to a larger role as the Champions League campaign continues.
