Napoli have been cleared to welcome Scott McTominay back after the Scotland midfielder completed the medical process required to resume professional football in Italy following heart surgery.
The Ligue 1 news
McTominay, 29, underwent an operation in early September after being diagnosed with a benign cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that can cause the heart to beat too quickly or too slowly without warning.
The Scottish international has now passed the examination demanded under Italian regulations for players returning after heart surgery. A doctor approved by the league authorised his return to elite-level football, and Napoli’s medical clearance has also been validated by the Italian league.
He has been back in team training since Saturday, handing Massimiliano Allegri a significant option at an important point in the campaign.
Napoli are ninth in Serie A after their opening five matches and have struggled without McTominay. The midfielder brings considerable international experience, with 73 Scotland appearances and 15 goals.
Next appointment in Italy
Napoli return from the international break to a demanding run of nine matches across 29 days.
- Roma visit on 24 October.
- Napoli travel to Juventus on 1 November.
McTominay’s availability arrives just before that crowded stretch, giving Allegri the chance to restore a key player as Napoli attempt to climb from their early-season position.
