Serie A’s UEFA Coefficient Hopes Hit After Inter, Napoli, Roma and Como Lose

Italy’s difficult Champions League week has made the European coefficient race a sharper concern for Serie A. Four defeats for Inter, Napoli, Como and Roma on the second matchday have left the country ninth in the provisional UEFA ranking, with the long road to an extra Champions League place now demanding a strong response across all three competitions.

The decision

The two leading nations in the UEFA ranking at the end of the season will receive an additional place in the 2027/28 Champions League. Italy remains a long way from that target after the results of 13 and 14 October 2026, a Champions League round without a point for its four representatives.

England lead the current standings, followed by Portugal and Norway. Germany are fourth and Spain fifth, while Italy sit behind Turkey, Greece and Azerbaijan in ninth.

There was some compensation elsewhere in Europe. Milan, Juventus and Atalanta each won their fixtures across the Europa League and Conference League, results that matter considerably in a coefficient contest where points from the second and third continental tournaments can shape the final order.

Six league-phase rounds remain, so the position is recoverable, but the margin for another poor week has narrowed. Inter and Napoli, both still without a point, have the most immediate work to do.

Inter coach Cristian Chivu is also set to be without Lautaro Martinez for 45 days. Reaching the last 16 directly would require a formidable return of five victories and a draw from the remaining programme, while three wins and a draw could be sufficient to reach the play-offs.

Napoli face a similarly difficult calculation after defeats against Arsenal and Villarreal. The Italian champions have also been beaten by Real Madrid and Club Brugge, underlining how little room there is for a further setback.

Como’s position is less severe. Cesc Fabregas’ side defeated RB Leipzig before losing away to Feyenoord in Rotterdam. Two wins and a draw could put the play-offs within reach, although the remaining opponents include Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Manchester United, Lens, AEK Athens and Real Betis.

Roma have shown both sides of their European campaign already. They drew in Istanbul against Fenerbahce, then suffered a 4-3 home defeat to Real Madrid after leading 3-1. The match turned in 420 seconds, with Roma conceding three times from set pieces in seven minutes at the Olimpico.

Five wins would be needed for Roma to bypass the play-offs and go straight into the last 16. A play-off place is more realistic, provided the defensive collapse against Madrid is not repeated.

Sunday’s picture

The coefficient table has become part of Italy’s season-long European story. Serie A’s clubs do not need an immediate miracle, but they do need results spread across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League if ninth place is to become a temporary low point rather than the final verdict.

  • Roma’s remaining fixtures include Slovan at home, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain away, Sporting at home, AEK Athens away and Davide Ancelotti’s Lille in Rome.
  • For Inter and Napoli, the next rounds must begin to turn zero points into a credible route towards the play-offs.
  • Milan, Juventus and Atalanta have already shown why wins outside the Champions League may prove equally important to Italy’s final ranking.
