Washington offered a sharp early lesson for the United States as Spain, the reigning world champions, turned a pair of first-half openings into a 2-0 friendly victory at Audi Field. Emma Hayes’ side created considerably more attempts on target and even missed a penalty, but Spain’s precision in the capital settled the first meeting of this two-match series.
The visitors struck in the third minute and again in the 13th, establishing a lead that the Americans could not overturn. Spain finished with three shots on target, compared with seven for the home side, yet their ruthless start proved the defining difference on an evening when the margins were small but costly.
Hayes said her players had been punished for errors in the details against a side she described as the world’s best. “When you meet the best team in the world, everything has to be carried out perfectly from the opening moment,” the British coach said after the match.
She was particularly frustrated by the nature of the two goals conceded. “You cannot find yourself 2-0 down against the best team in the world, especially in the way we allowed those goals,” she said, while adding that such moments are part of the learning process.
There was, nevertheless, encouragement in the American performance after the difficult opening. Hayes believed her team generated enough to score and, potentially, more than once, but lacked the final choice and technical finish in decisive areas. She pointed to positive elements across the display, while acknowledging that the moments around both boxes fell below the standard required.
Spain’s composure reflected the level that has carried them to the world title. Hayes warned that giving the European side too much deference in certain parts of the pitch would invite punishment, given the quality Spain possess and the clarity of their current game.
The two nations meet again on Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania. Hayes expects the United States to play with greater conviction in the final third and to correct the details that undermined them in Washington. “We have to trust our own ability,” she said. “I am looking forward to it. It will be another excellent contest.”
