Spain U17 Women Open World Cup With 2-0 Victory Over Mexico

Morocco’s Women’s Under-17 World Cup opened Spain’s Group F journey with a measured 2-0 win over Mexico on Monday, a result shaped by patience before half-time and a sharp piece of finishing soon after the interval.

Mila Martínez’s Spain had to withstand an energetic Mexican opening. Mexico, coached by Miguel Gamero, looked to create the first clear openings in an evenly balanced first half, but Spain found the breakthrough three minutes before the break. Elena Vizuete’s attempt was stopped by Mexican goalkeeper Ania López, only for Carolina Ferrera to react first to the rebound and put Spain ahead in the 42nd minute.

The second goal arrived shortly after the restart and carried a little more distance. In the 48th minute, Vizuete collected the ball on the right, moved infield onto her left side and struck from outside the penalty area. Her shot clipped the post before crossing the line, giving Spain the two-goal margin.

Mexico then tightened up defensively, preventing Spain from extending their lead further, but could not find a route back into the contest. The victory gives Spain their first three points in a Group F also containing Australia and Chile.

Spain’s next assignment in Morocco comes against Australia on Thursday, 22 October, with the opening result placing Martínez’s side in a promising position as the group begins to take shape.
