Sponsor Drone Display Sparks Anger at Lionel Messi Argentina Farewell

For 85,000 people gathered to mark Lionel Messi’s farewell with Argentina, the final image was not the captain’s goal or his two assists against Benin. It was a sponsor’s name hanging above the stadium in lights, where many had expected a tribute to the player who has defined an era for the national side.

Argentina won the friendly 3-0 on Tuesday, with Messi central to the result in a night intended as an emotional goodbye. He scored once and created the other two goals, offering the sort of decisive contribution that has accompanied his long international career.

Yet the mood shifted after the final whistle. Messi stayed on the pitch to watch a planned drone display, while supporters looked skyward expecting a farewell dedicated to their number 10. Instead, the drones formed the logo and name of one of the Argentine Football Association’s commercial partners.

A farewell interrupted by commerce

The response from the stands was immediate. A chorus of boos spread through the ground as supporters objected to the commercial message appearing at the moment reserved for Messi’s salute.

Messi’s own reaction added to the unease. As the display unfolded above him, he was seen looking up with evident discomfort, an awkward scene that quickly circulated widely online.

The episode left a jarring postscript to an otherwise celebratory Argentina evening: a player bidding farewell with the familiar combination of a goal and two assists, and a crowd feeling that the final tribute had been diverted away from him.
