Nearly three months after Argentina’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Spain, Nicolás Tagliafico has offered a frank assessment of the night when the champions of 2022 fell short of their familiar standard. The left-back said Argentina were overwhelmed in the decisive match and failed to reproduce the level that had carried them through earlier rounds.
A final that did not resemble Argentina
For Tagliafico, the performance against Spain stood apart from Argentina’s other tournament displays, and from the side that lifted the World Cup in 2022.
“The feeling after the final was very poor compared with the other matches,” he said. “We were not the Argentina everyone knew, and we were far from what we had shown in 2022.”
Spain’s control proved decisive
-
Tagliafico said Spain held the tactical advantage throughout the final, with physical and mental fatigue affecting Argentina’s response.
-
He pointed to Spain’s established ability to press high, regain possession and keep the ball for long spells.
-
Once Argentina lost control of the match, Tagliafico felt his team struggled to adapt. He said Argentina need to remain compact in such moments but are not at their best when playing without possession.
-
The defender also highlighted the importance of technical precision under pressure. Argentina could not consistently find the mental clarity required for one-touch combinations or escapes from Spain’s press.
-
Those small inaccuracies repeatedly returned the ball to Spain, allowing La Roja to maintain their command of the final.
“Tactically, they ran over us,” Tagliafico said. “When you need the clarity to play quickly or get out of pressure and you cannot do it, every imprecise touch means the opponent has the ball again.”
The next Argentina cycle
The defeat has left Argentina’s players with a sharp lesson ahead of their next international commitments. The task will be to recover the identity that took the team to the summit of world football, now entering a period without Lionel Messi as its leading figure.
