From the England camp, with Spain waiting in the Nations League and the Ballon d’Or argument already running across Europe, Thomas Tuchel has placed Harry Kane at the centre of his own ballot. Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal have each made persuasive cases for the award, but England’s German coach sees Kane’s season as the decisive one.
Tuchel spoke little more than a day before England’s opening Nations League meeting with Spain, backing his captain after another exceptionally productive year for club and country. Kane collected the European Golden Shoe for a second time after scoring 36 Bundesliga goals, while his combined total for Bayern Munich and England reached 73 in all competitions.
The case, in Tuchel’s view, extends beyond a striker’s numbers. Kane’s Bayern campaign brought three trophies, and his international contribution carried England to the World Cup semi-finals before the side finished third. Bayern also reached the Champions League last four.
“Harry Kane is my Ballon d’Or winner this year,” Tuchel said. “More than 70 goals, three trophies with Bayern Munich, and semi-finals at both the World Cup and the Champions League.”
It is a notably direct endorsement at a time when the individual prize has no obvious consensus candidate. Mbappé’s status remains formidable, while Yamal’s rise has given the discussion another generation and another footballing landscape. Yet Tuchel’s message from the England base was clear: Kane’s scoring, silverware and deep runs on both the club and international stages make him his choice.
